As we welcome a new year and a new decade, we are excited about the latest trends in luxury and custom homes. Technology and sustainability are always at the forefront of design and home building, but we are seeing an increase in various other trends as well. Here are the top four trends we expect to see more of in custom homes in the new year.
Home Automation
Home automation systems are increasingly in demand as they allow homeowners to control everything from home security to temperature and lighting. Even better, most systems can be monitored and controlled remotely, allowing homeowners to turn on lights and turn up the thermostat on their way home or make sure doors are shut and shades are down if they are away. Not only do these systems offer greater peace of mind and convenience, but they can also help owners reduce their energy consumption. With all the benefits a home automation system can provide, it’s no surprise that this trend has been on the rise.

Natural Luxury
More and more, homeowners desire a home that feels connected to nature and creates a sense of sanctuary and respite. Therefore, we expect to see more natural, organic, and eco-friendly materials, along with rustic wood elements in home designs this year. We are already seeing a transition into gorgeous, warm neutral colors and organic shapes. Earth tones, lighter hardwood floors, raw edges, and a lived-in but refined design style are all on trend.

Indoor/Outdoor Living
Going along with the Natural Luxury trend and the desire to be connected to nature, is the Indoor/Outdoor Living trend, which includes blending indoor and outdoor spaces.
Examples of this are large glass doors that open directly to a patio or garden and glass sunrooms that allow you to feel the warmth of the sunshine year-round (a definite plus in Chicago). We also love to create exterior “rooms” with covered patios, exterior fireplaces, and heat lamps; all allowing our homeowners to enjoy their outdoor spaces well into the Fall.

Industrial Design
Industrial homes are characterized by the use of materials such as iron, aluminum and other metals, often juxtaposed with brick, as well as clean lines and a modern feel. Our Urban Classic Home perfectly showcases this industrial aesthetic and is a nod to the homeowner’s family background in metal manufacturing. Interior elements include exposed brick walls, industrial-style lighting, oak-beamed ceilings, and metal cased openings and railings. Read more about this home in the article below.
